Before Considering A Waiver, Please Be Sure You Have Alternate Coverage The Is Valid In New York State
Not all health insurance plans that originate outside of New York State provide out of state coverage. Both medical and behavioral health coverage are specific to the student's individual plan and should be verified before waiving the Pace Insurance Plan. Approval of a waiver request does not guarantee that your health insurance plan will adequately cover any medical or behavioral health situation that may arise.
The waiver process is primarily a self-reporting and affirmation of appropriate coverage. For international students there is an independent verification process to ensure that their plans include repatriation and evacuation coverage, but students THEMSELVES are responsible for ensuring that the coverage they have (which they feel exempts them from the default coverage) meets their healthcare needs.
It is critical that all students weighing the decision of whether or not to waive out of the school accident/sickness plan consider not only whether they have insurance coverage, but also the degree to which that coverage is valid in New York State.
The best way to verify the coverage (and limitations in coverage) of your insurance plan is to contact your insurance company. In most cases, there will be a contact number on the back of your insurance card. Before waiving out of the Pace insurance plan, we urge all students to take time to check with their insurance company to verify appropriate coverage in New York State. It is important to get specific confirmation, asking about whether the plan covers the following at the same level in NYS as it may in their home state or country:
- Urgent care
- Wellness visits
- Sick visits
- Prescriptions
- Behavioral Health Care
- Advanced imaging and diagnostic testing
- Physical therapy
